From nature to art: Michel Mullèr in ELLE Decoration
In its special Belgian edition of April 2020, ELLE Decoration opened its art section with a work by Michel Mullèr: a large round wall piece in a calm, light living room. Inside, journalist Marleen Duerinckx visited his gallery and atelier on Leopoldstraat in Antwerp for the feature Van natuur naar kunst (From nature to art).
A creator of nature objects
His business card says maître fleuriste, but the magazine found another title more fitting: creator of nature objects. Mullèr began with dried flowers. Over the years his techniques and materials grew into something entirely his own.
By hand, and with what the magazine called the patience of an angel, he turns natural materials into timeless art objects. They fit as naturally in a classic interior as in a modern one.
A gallery where you see the artist at work
The magazine was impressed by the showroom, and even more so by seeing Mullèr at work in his atelier. The gallery on Leopoldstraat is both: a place to discover finished works and to watch new ones take shape.
The right place for every work
Some works slowly develop a deep, warm patina over the years. Light and setting matter, so Mullèr gladly advises clients on where to hang or place a piece. In his experience, a work often chooses its own place, until object, room and residents form one whole.
Over forty years of making
Michel and his wife Lin opened their first shop in Tongeren in July 1984. Since March 2019 the gallery and atelier have been in Antwerp, opposite the botanical garden and the Botanic Sanctuary hotel, where his works now hang.
Visit the gallery at Leopoldstraat 29, Antwerp. Open Wednesday to Saturday, 11:00–18:00, or by appointment.
